How to Open an "AutoRecovery save" document

I had an open WORD 2002 file when my computer froze (a
problem with my email service provider) and I had no
choice but to manually shut off the power (I have Windows
XP Home). When I powered up, I found my document (over
300 KB) had disappeared. Finally, I found it in
Documents and Settings under my name, Applications,
Microsoft, and Word. But it had "AutoRecovery save" in
front of my title, and it had "wbk" as an extension; not
the "asd" that Microsoft says it should have to open it.
When I try to open the file, I get a window that
says "The document name or path is not valid. Try these
suggestions: Check the file permissions for the document
or drive; Use the file open box to locate the document."
I have tried everything to open this file, including
these suggestions, and cannot. I would greatly appreciate
any suggestions.

Hi John,

What you are seeing is the backup of the AutoRecovery Save and you should be able to open it even if it dosn't have a *.doc extenstion. However since you are unable to open it, it sounds like the file is corrupt.

First try using File/Open and from the Open drop down select "Open and Repair". You may be able to recover the file using this option.

Beth,

Thanks very much for your response. I have seen "Open
and Repair" before but can't seem to find it now. I get
to Open as part of the File drop-down menu, but there is
no further drop-down for Open. Your continuing help is
much appreciated! John
