how to open archive.pst

I found three files, by going through local settings/ application data/
microsoft/outlook: archive, backup and outlook. I wanted to open and review
them. When they were double clicked, the message said "Windows can't open
this file". "What do you want to do? 1, use the web to find...... 2, Select
program from the list."
I was looking for Outlook program to open from the list. However this did
not exist in the list. Word program did not work. Recommended program(default
setting I found in the list ) was ACD. but that did not work either.
What program is needed? I am a beginner, please help me. I am not sure even
the steps that I tried is right one.

Make sure that the extension of these files is (.pst). If Outlook is not
installed, then there will be no program associated with this file extension
and Windows will prompt you to choose something. If Outlook IS installed,
try going to the directory where the files are in DOS, then checking the
extension and renaming it to (ex. archive.pst) if it was somehow changed.

Finally, if Outlook is installed and the extension is correct, when the box
comes up to select a program, look for Microsoft Outlook in the list. If it
is not there, Browse for (C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Outlook.exe). This path may vary depending on what version you
have and if you have upgraded, etc.

Hope this helps!

Well, did you ever try opening them in the application that knows how to
understand the proprietary format used within a .pst file, namely
OUTLOOK?

File -> Open

In Outlook, click File>Open>Outlook Data File (or Personal Folders File,
depending oon your version), browse to the PST, select it, and click OK.
All done.

Hi, Vanguardx, Todd, and Brian,
Thanks for the replies.
As Brian suggested, I went to Outlook 2000 (Todd, this is a proof that
Outlook is installed.), and clicked "file/open, and "personal folers
files(.pst)". When clicked again, there were three files: archive, backup,
and outlook. When 'property" is checked, archive has significant data.
When Archive icon (file) was clicked. it said that I did not have the
permission to open......
Now it seems that I need the permission. The PC is mine and I am the sole
user of this pc.

Even if after I get the permission, I wll encounter a problem. The reason is
as follow.
To Todd, I believe that Outlook is installed and the archive file has .pst
extension. (Because when I tried to open by using "open with" menu, file name
was "archive.pst."). Also Outlook 2000 is a part of Office 2000 that I
purchased a couple of years ago. Yet Outlook is not in the list. Thus I need
to know fine Outlook program in the list.

Am I in the right track to solve this somewhat silly problmes. My os is XP.
I do not know how to use DOS in XP.

Thanks.
