How to Read out shapes an export data?

Hello everybody,

for my student research project, my first step is to convert an UML
structure diagram, painted in MS Visio into an XML File for further code
generation.
Because I have to use an own XML interchange format, and I'm a newbie in
MS Visio, I'd like to know:

Is there a way to read out date from a MS Visio Projekt (like
UML-CLasses, Relations, etc.) and the properties of the elements (like
name, attributes, operations etc.) to write them manually into an Text
or XML File?

And if this isn't possible, is there a way, to generate my own Visio
Shapes, add attributes und export these date into an extern File?

I hope, someone can help me, how I could handle this, or someone can
show me a source, where I can get further help.
