Your options include:
- make sure you are actually looking at it in Excel
(people have been known to open XLS files in Word by mistake and think
they are corrupted; if you were then to save it in Word, the file WILL
be corrupted as seen by Excel!)

- trying to open it in a later version of Excel [I don't know which
version you are using, and it always helps if you say]; 2003 and later
are better at repairing corrupted files

- trying to open it in OpenOffice's spreadsheet program (I believe it
is called Calc) and saving it back as an Excel file

- trying to retrieve data from its worksheets by creating a new
workbook and entering a formula like ='C:\MyDir\[Broken.xls]Sheet1'!A1
and (if it works) copying this right and down

- going back to your last good backup (and if you don't have one, this
experience will remind you of the importance of making backups of
valuable files).
