How to recover Word documents when the auto recovery doesn't work

I have Office XP - when creating a document in Word I get an error message
that says: Runtime error -
Program:C\Programfiles\microsoftoffice\office10\winword.exe.- Abnormal
program termination. - The document and Word then closes down. When I reload
Word the auto recovery program initiates but will not complete the recovery
process before the same above error message reappears and shuts down the
recovery process. This is a recent problem and I don't have a clue about how
to or to whom I can ask for a solution. Can anyone out there help me?

Are you able to open other documents or are you stuck in a continuous
Recovery loop?

Terry, Thanks for your reply to my question. In the auto recovery pane I
cannot open the two documents that were saved there when Word aborted. When I
try to save or open those documents I get that same..."abnormal program
termination" error message, when I haven't terminated the program. The only
option I then have is to click on OK and that is when the recovery process
aborts and Word shuts down-which then requires me to reload Word again. It
appears to be a timing issue when I'm writing my documents. If I save the
documents periodically while creating I can avoid the error message. However,
If I try to finish my document without saving it, I get the above message.
This has just started occuring within the last few weeks.
I appreciate your thoughts on this problem. Do you have a suggestion on
where I may look for solutions?
