My fill color menu is not working. Any suggestions? I already tried
rebooting and "detect and correct".

In what way is your fill color menu "not working"? If you have
Windows XP, then try clicking on Start | Control Panel |
Accessibility Options | Display | uncheck the "Use high contrast"
box | OK.

I have Windows 98. When I click the button the menu button pops up with all
gray boxes, no colors.

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Accessibility Options |
Display tab | uncheck the "Use High Contrast" box | Apply | OK.
Or the equivalent keyboard shortcut to toggle high contrast
on/off is LeftAlt+LeftShift+PrintScreen .

Before clicking on fill color, did you first select an object
that can be filled with color?

Yes, the fill color menu has been perfectly for years, up until today. I
select a cell in a table. Then I click fill color, and as I said, the drop
down menu shows all gray squares and does respond to clicking.

If you're using the Fill Color button on the Drawing toolbar, then this
won't work in table cells. Although the Shading button on the Tables and
Borders toolbar uses the same paint can icon, they are actually different
commands. Fill color is used for AutoShapes, Shading for paragraphs and
tables. In addition to the Tables and Borders toolbar, you can access this
through Format | Borders and Shading.
