How to restore "highlight" and delete capability in Office 97?

I used to make corrections to text by highlighting text to be deleted and
clicking "delete". Now when I attempt that, the highlighted text is not
deleted and down in bottom left hand corner appears: "Delete Block? No
(Yes)". Clicking on this area does not do anything except turn it off and I
still am unable to delete. Thanks for any advice.

In Word, click on Tools | Options | General | uncheck the two boxes for
WordPerfect help and navigation | OK.
