How to set a default currency

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Each time I start a new spreadsheet, I have to set the currency to $, otherwise there is no particular currency selected.

Previous posters have suggested that this problem may be resolved by setting a default currency in System Preferences. However, I've been unable to find any such option in System Preferences.

Any help/guidance would be appreciated.

It's in the format pane of the language and Text preferences. Excel
collects this information when it starts up, so you must quit and
restart Excel for the preference change to take effect.
