how to set up merge fields

I use mail merge to print labels. The problem is that my merge fields move
when I switch it over to View Merge Data. I then have to move my info for
each client to be set where I want it on the label. I tried doing a tab set
for each of my merge fields, but that doesn't seem to help either. Is there
a way to have my data stay exactly where I put my merge fields?

Perhaps the size of the inserted data is causing the the document/label
to re-paginate? Are you forcing a new line for each field?

There is plenty of room for everything that gets inputed. I just want my
fields to be fixed. I tried using tabs, but either I am using them wrong or
they are not used to keep the fields in a fixed place on the label.

We can't see what you are doing, and we can't tell what you want it to
look like, and we can't guess where you are putting your fields. So are
you trying to place fields someplace other than left aligned? Are you
trying to put multiple fields on a single line but the contents are
different lengths? If you want you can put a table in the label and park
fields anywhere you want them.
