I'd like to run AutoArchive at certain schedule or after 5 PM for example.

I don't think there is any way to set an hourly time interval for AutoArchive
nor to set it to start at any time other than midnight (with a daily interval
-- the default is 14 days). You might try a third-party addin -- look here:

Is it hard coded to run at midnight? According to my observation it runs at
5 pm.

the other question I'd like to ask is: do I need to leave Outlook open when
it runs? I have a laptop and normally shut it down when I'm not using it.
If I don't know when it will run or how to control it and Outlook needs to
open then it might never
run.

Clearly an application needs to be running in order for it to do anything.
If Outlook must perform the operation, then Outlook must be running. If you
use a third-party app, then that app must be running. The documenation for
the app should tell you if it also requires Outlook to run.
