How to setup an email server?

Gentlemen
I have figured out that the reason all the notification in my Project Server
2003 is not going to users is that the mail server we configured must
authenticate users to send messages.

Does Project Server support this kind of email server? I cannot find where I
can fill the user/password for it (only the smtp stuff, port in Web Mail
configuration but no passwords).

How can I setup an mail server that's outside my installation?

Thanks a lot
Marcos

Marcos:

The typical solution is to enable this at the mail server. For most mail
systems it requires allowing SMTP mail relay from the Project Server IP
address.

Thanks for your promptness.

I think I don't have access to this kind of configuration (my mail server is
outside, in an Internet provider).

To get things done, I though that I could setup am email server at the same
machine that we installed Project, making this server without authentication
and it relay emails to the outside server (with the correct password
configured).

1) Is it a way to go?
2) It's doesn't sound a little weird that to send notifications by email, I
have to go to this setup, is it not common to have an email server that
requires authentication? Doesn't Project Server support this kind of
configuration?

It's common for email servers to require authentication when they're facing
the Internet. It's not common to point Project Server at a mail server
that's out of your control. You can setup IIS email services, but I'm
unaware of a way to get it to authenticate to another server. If you have
another email server program available that you think will work, go for it.
