How to start outlook 2007 with large pst

R

reuben

I have installed outlook 2007 upgrade but it will not launch since it says
that the previous .pst is too large. It suggests deleting some of it but now
that Outlook 2000 is uninstalled I am stuck. Is the answer to uninstall
outlook 2007 and re-install 2000 and delete files? seems kind of clunky..
help please

An upgrade does not and cannot upgrade your pst file.
What size is the pst file?
Was it working ok in outlook 2k?

yes--the file was working in 2000. something happened during the
reconfiguration? am thinking that perhaps I should uninstall 2007 and
re-install outlook 2000 and try to reduce the size of the file--file is
around 1.9 gigs I believe (truly huge)..

what about temoving the file altogether from the computer--can outlook start
without a pst file or can I direct it to another pst I have?

thanks!

If Outlook 2000 was not complaining about this PST and it was working, you
are VERY lucky indeed. PST size problems can start at around 1.5GB and
really become evident at 1.8GB.

It's possible you may be able to tweak the size restrictions in the registry
(in particular the WarnFileSize setting) so that Outlook won't complain. If
OL 2000 could open it, OL 2007 should be able to as well. However, if
adjusting the settings works, it would be in your best interest to migrate
the data to a new Unicode PST immediately. See this for the settings
adjustment: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832925/en-us

You can do this easily. In Control Panel's Mail applet, create a new PST
and make it the delivery location. Then the next time Outlook starts, the
new PST will be used for mail delivery (and all the other default folders).
Adjust the WarnFileSize setting to match the MaxFileSize setting and try to
open the old PST. If it works, you can then copy the data it contains to
the new PST and you won't have to worry about the size issue again. If you
do get the data moved, make sure you adjust the *FileSize settings back to
their original values.

DUDE! No sense tiptoeing around this one... OL 2000 used the old ANSI format
and has an absolute limit of 2G...in other words 1.9 is waaay too big for an
ansi file..its toast. If it was still working in outlook 2000 you were very
lucky. Theres only one way to recover "some" of your data. First make a copy
of the oversized .pst, work with the copy only..you may have to do this a few
times. You'll need to download the oversize pst truncation utility, which is
affectionately referred to by most techs as the hatchet. This thing will
indescriminately remove data from the pst...who knows what you'll lose
really. Hack it down to about 1.7 at least and then run a scan pst on the
file. Heres the real kicker though... your gonna need to run the scanpst from
office 2000 or else you'll pooch all the data. Did I also mention this
process can take litterally hours? Once its recovered down to about 1.7
though Import it into the new 2007 pst. Good luck man I feel for ya I really
do...been there.. done that... got the t-shirt.

ANSI psts max out at 2G
Unicode psts about 5G
The new 2007 tested to 10G with a theoretical limit of 33 Terrabytes

Yeah good idea Brian! yeah if you set up a new profile you might be able to
open the old pst with it... if not... you might be stuck hackin er down. I'd
definately try brians idea fisrt though..but make a backup of the file first,
try opening the copy.

NEVER import unless you want to lose what data you recovered from scanpst.exe. Open the .pst file in Outlook 2007 - never any need to import a native Outlook file. Do you IMPORT your Word documents from a previous version? No, you just open them.

I had Outlook 2003 with three .PST. One is 3.91GB, another 2.08 and
another 500Mb. The bigger one is the one that received the major part
of the email (the main file).
Maybe Outlook was a bit slow but I have never had a problem.
Problems came with the upgrade to Outlook 2007.
See the thread "Major problems with Outlook 2007 upgrading Office 2003
to Office 2007."
