How to start tasks only when resources are available

P

peteseats

We have a limited amount of resources in our team and we have wor
piling up. We only have 2 designers and 4 developers, each with ther
own speciality.

We currently have 12 projects that need to be started, but before the
start our lead designer must complete a task (which takes 1 day). Fro
here the devs can start.

How can I get the next task to start only when the RESOURCE i
available, rather than when the task is completed?

The only way I seem to be able to do it is to have a task called th
dev/designer. For instance:

-Project HSBC
-Design
-George Task
-George- (resource)

any ideas?

Thank

It's relatively simple to do this, but you need to be using Project the
way it's intended to be used. The hard part is building the model of
your project execution, e.g. what tasks are done, in what logical
sequence, which resources should be assigned, etc. All that up to you.

Define the project model. Get the predecessors/successors right. Assign
the resources. Project won't chose the resources for you. You do that.
You can use Project "leveling" for Project to recompute the scheduled
based on availability. This "leveling" will postpone tasks until the
resource is available.

Have you had a chance to look at one of the many books out there that
describe how to use Project?
