how to stop numbering on some lines

I use Win Xp and Word 2002. How do I stop numbering on certain lines?
Someone told me to hit Shift+Enter but that does not do anything.

Are we talking about paragraph numbering or line numbering?

If paragraph numbering, you can use the Skip Numbering command (not
recommended) or apply an unnumbered style.

If line numbering, you can select the paragraphs, go to Format | Paragraph |
Line and Page Breaks and check the box for "Suppress line numbers."
