How to stop Outlook from Freezing up

Outlook 2000
I installed Outlook and activated my email account. When I turn outlook on
it downloads my emails automatically. Afterward it will not allow me to read
the message subjects, neither will it allow me to delete them. I opened the
view menu to see what the current view was 'messages'. I want to send and
receive emails when I desire.
