How to stop Research pane from automatically showing up

I want to find out how to disable Research pane from automatically showing
up in Word 2003/Excel 2003.

The Research Pane doesn't usually appear automatically, but it does
appear when you Alt+click. So don't Alt+click.

....and if there's a way to disable it, we haven't discovered how yet.
