how to stop subtotals in Pivot Tbl

I just searched thes forums on how to turn off subtotals whe
row/columns categories more than 1.

I found the following - does not work for me.

You can deactivate the row subtotals going to the field setting
(double
click on the header, for example), and selecting none in the subtotals
section.
