How to tell which version a doc was created in

If you can open the doc, it's easy. Simply choose File >
Properties and click the General tab. The Type: entry
will list the format. (Note: From Word 97 to Word 2002
are considered the same format here.)

You actually get better information if you use the Properties view in File
Open, which will distinguish Word 97, 2000, and 2002.
