How-to use a letterhead layout inside word

Word 2000

I would like to use a custom designed Letterhead in word that consists of a
header image and an image that runs along the left portion of the page.

On a 8.5 x 11 page the active area for the letters contents would start
3.375 inches from the top edge of the page and 2.25 inches from the left
edge of the page. This is where I would like to place the letters contents.
In the top and bottom margins I would like to place a jpeg image of the
letterheads graphics.

Any suggestions on how this could be accomplished? I have tried using frames
and find that only 1 frame will print at a time.

Thank you!

Thank you for the excellent instructions Suzanne, unfortunately I had
problems again with the frame on the left of my page. I am not a big word
user as I mostly use PageMaker and CorelDraw.

The Header works out correctly, but the frame seems to be separate from the
page and I cannot get it to intirigate or print with the page like the
header does. My plan was to export the Header and the type along the left of
the page as jpeg files so that formatting and text attributes are retained.

Here is a link to what I see on my page and a link of what I am trying to
achieve, any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Take a look at: How to set up letterhead or some other document where you
want one header on the first page and a different header on other pages.
http://www.addbalance.com/word/headersfooters.htm This gives step-by-step
instructions. (It also has the following links)

If you are interested in creating templates that will work with the letter
wizard or use that wizard, you should look at the chapter on Advanced
Document Formatting in Using Office 2003 (or whatever your version is),
Special Edition, by Ed Bott and Woody Leonhard. It has detailed instructions
including instructions on getting the fields you want from your Outlook
Contacts for addressing a letter. (Chapter 19 of SE Using Office 2003) You
should be able to get this through your public library or at Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0789729555/balancecheckbookA/

Finally, take a look at the letter templates that come with Word. While they
are no great shakes as letterhead, they do use styles and AutoText lists
very well. If you use the same style names that are used in those templates
in your own letterhead for the same parts of the document, you will have
better luck with using the built-in AutoText entries in Word.

Hope this helps,

You've used the wrong sort of frame. The kind that Word makes very easy to
find (the kind that are on the Frames toolbar) are of use mainly for Web
pages. The sort you want are the text box-like ones that you get by using
the Insert Frame button on the Forms toolbar (if you find these useful, you
can add the Frame command back to the Insert menu using Tools | Customize).

Thank you Charles and Suzanne for the excellent information and links, they
were very informative and helpful.
I now have the letterhead configured and set-up correctly thanks to your
assistance.
