how to use a shortcut key setup in word when writing emails?

I have a shortcut key setup in word (2007). I'd like it to work when I'm
editing emails too. Other customizations (e.g. autocorrect) seem to be
getting picked up. Or is it because it clashes with something already
defined? I'm using
Alt-C. Can I get my definition to override? It's much more useful to me!
