steve

I would like to use a theme on the default portal page,
there is NO documentation out there on how to change the
default portal page by using a theme.

there is alot on how to add a theme to a subweb but not
to the default portal site.

Anyone out there have any luck changing the default
portal pages?

There is some documentation, but it is not what you want. The architecture
of a Portal is such that FrontPage themes do not work on them. However, you
CAN trick the portal into using a FrontPage theme -- it's just a small
amount of work.

IN FRONTPAGE:

1. Create your theme to look just as you want it to look
2. Create a sub site off your portal
3. Apply your theme to this subsite
4. From Tools > Options make sure Hidden folders are showing
5. Refresh the site
6. open the _themes directory
7. open the themeName directory
8. open the file named themeName1101-109.css (the numbers may be different,
but make sure you get the one that has FOUR numbers next to it, like 1111,
1011, 1101, etc.
9. save it to the root site as "theme.css"

IN YOUR PORTAL (browse in IE)
1. Click to Modify Site Settings (the path is not clear in my memory and I
don't have portal installed this afternoon)
2. On one of the Site Settings pages it asks for the Stylesheet to be used
for the Portal. Type in the path to the theme.css file you saved above

That's it.

Mike makes a good point. My post assumes you were talking about SharePoint
Portal Server 2003, which cannot have themes applied to it. But if you are
talking about a different Portal, then Mike is right.

PS
If that theme uses any graphics (most FP2003 themes do), you will also have to copy all the theme images (referenced in the
theme.css) to the same relative location

I realize how to modify the Subwebs, I'm talking about
modifying the Default Portal Page, the Portal Site page.

the first one when you create a new Sharepoint portal for
the first time fresh out of the box, how do you modify
that page?

Hi Steve,

By default portal page I've assumed you mean the
index.htm or default.htm pages.
Themes may be applied and removed on a subweb or per page basis.

Well then how do you modify that ugly looking sharepoint
portal 2003 default page, do I used your trick for the CSS
pages?
as that looks like it would work as long as the css point
to the images etc.

I have a theme I'm designing, and want to apply it to the
2003 default page, as Microsoft should have known people
would want to change that ugly portal default page.
