Some projector remotes claim to be able to control a PC. Typically,
that requires a connection between the projector and the PC that plugs
into the PC's serial/USB port. [Keep in mind the video signal from the
PC to the projector uses the VGA ports.]
I have never tried to use a projector remote to control a PC. It seems
kinda backwards. Not to mention that every projector remote that I
have seen used infrared for communication, which means you need clear
line of sight between the remote and the receiver on the projector
(typically located towards the front of the projector). Because of
that requirement alone I will not even consider a IR control.
It's a lot simpler and not too expensive to get a radio frequency
control for the laptop that plugs into a USB port. The one I currently
prefer duplicates a mouse:
