How to use Entourage Rules with IMAP accounts

J

john.

I am totally confused on how to use Rules on IMAP accounts in
Entourage.

I have two IMAP accounts and one POP account configured on Entourage,
I have several rules configured and working properly mainly to copy or
move incoming messages into specific folders. However, when I try to
configure rules to move outgoing messages it all goes very wrong when
working with the IMAP accounts. I raised another topic on this subject
some weeks ago and had some response. but unfortunately nothing that
helped. Since then I have doe some further investiagtion and have
found the follwoing:-

If I send a message from the IMPA account and set up a rule to copy or
move the outgoing message to a specific folder on my computer, the
rule fails,(the message is sent OK) however another rule set up under
IMAP to monitor incoming mail on the same IMAP account is triggered
and the OUTGOING IMAP Message is placed in another folder set up to
hold INCOMING Messages.

How does IMAP work? how are my IMAP rules being triggered by an
outgoing message.

I am assuming that when you set up the rules under the heading POP,
IMAP these are the incomming rules? and all OUTGOING rules are set up
under the heading OUTGOING?

As an expieriment i tried to set up a rule under IMAP to detect my
outgoing IMAP message adn then move it to the specific folder and it
also failed.

At this stage any help would be appreciated

Thanks

John

Very strange. I've never heard of this behavior. It sounds like you're
experiencing some sort of delay in the move process. Try this:

Go to Tools --> Accounts... and double-click your IMAP account to edit it.

Under the Options tab is a feature to "Send commands to the server
simultaneously". Enable or disable that compared to what it's set to now.

Some IMAP accounts support this feature and some don't. I use Gmail and
know that it supports this being enabled. If you enable it and then
begin getting errors for the account then you'll need to disable it and
look for a different solution.

That's correct.

Ok I have done some tests and produced the following
First Test message:-
Rule Gmail IN (IMAP) ON
Rule Gmail Outgoing ON
Rule Gmail Out (IMAP) OFF
Second Test message:-
Out message is transferred to the wrong folder due to the Gmail In
(IMAP) rule
Rule Gmail IN (IMAP) ON
Rule Gmail Outgoing OFF
Rule Gmail Out (IMAP) ON
2 copies of the outgoing message are in the correct folder
Third Test message:-
Out message is transferred to the wrong folder due to the Gmail In
(IMAP) rule
Rule Gmail IN (IMAP) OFF
Rule Gmail Outgoing OFF
Rule Gmail Out (IMAP) ON
2 copies of the outgoing message are in the correct folder
The only time I can get the outgoing message in the correct folder
seems to be when I have the OUT rule in IMAP (incoming?) enabled??
One other observation I have recently noticed is that when I test and
I get the result with 2 copies of the outgoing message in the correct
folder, the first copy gets transferred there almost immediately after
the message has been sent, the second copy get's transferred to the
folder after I select Sent Messages folder (in left had column under
the Name of my IMAP account) and then a few seconds later I see a copy
of the last message appear in the folder and almost immediately that
is when the second copy ends up in the correct folder on my computer.
This surely cannot be correct?
A Couple of other points I have live sync with Server selected, and it
does not seem to make any difference if I select Send Commands to
server simultaneously elected or not
Thanks

An update to my last post on this topic.

I have now tested the same rules on my @me.com account which is also
IMAP and I have no problems with the rules on this account....is this
a strange Entourage issue or something strange with Gmail IMAP???

FWIW, I'm having the exact same issue with an academic IMAP server. The workaround I've found is to create an incoming IMAP rule that moves any messages "from" me into my local Sent folder, but of course to get this to work I have to click on my IMAP Sent folder every time I send a message, to get it to download.

I too would appreciate a cleaner, more automatic solution....
