How to use MS Project to manage resources

J

Jhmtaylor

We wish to use MS project to manage the work flow for resources rather
than the project work. We have 5 separate business units that all work
sequentially on tasks for many projects at the same time. Our
objective is to allocate the tasks from these many projects so that
our resources are fully utilised. We are newbies to MS Project and so
any pointers or similar templates we can modify to get started would
be sincerely appreciated

This probably too big of a subject to discuss in this newsgroup. I'd
strongly recommend engaging with a microsoft certified partner (with the EPM
competency) to help you deploy this tool in your organisation.

If you're intent on doing this alone then there is a magnitude of literature
available to help guide you.

Here's a few links to get you started links

First, what Paul Conroy said is very good advice.

You can use Microsoft Project to do what you want to do, but you can
also do it using Excel. I have done both.

If I understand your requirements, you would not need Project Server -
just Project, to start. You would create a local resource pool and
assign tasks from projects and use the resource availablility views
plus the new-for-Project Professional 2007 Visual Reports tools to
provide reporting.

However, using Project Server would be better because of the increased
analytics you can perform, plus capturing project level metadata makes
it more valuable.

Hope this helps,
