How to use the INDIRECT function on closed files

Hi,

I am trying to use the INDIRECT function to retrieve data from externa
xls files. by changing the string in an other cell, it selects th
necessary file and retrieves the data, but only when the file is open
This is a large problem and is their a way to solve the problem????
