out how to view the headers
of emails received by the
outlook.

when I click the properties
for the email, there is simply
a small dialog window with
no options to see the headers.

While you're at it, would you test something in Outlook 2007 if that's
what you're running?

Type "header" into the help search box.

Here, one of the first couple of "hits" looks likely and if I follow
it, I get detailed instructions for viewing the headers. Only the
instrux are all about using the ribbon interface. Hello? My copy of
OL has no ribbons. Looks like the web help content's gotten all mixed
up with that for 2010.

Do you see the same?

Update:

Ah. The instructions refer to opening a message. Since you can see
messages in several views and since (to me at least) "visible message"
equates to "open message" the instructions aren't explicit enough.

Turns out that you need to doubleclick the message in the in-box so that
it opens in a separate window; THAT window has the ribbon interface, and
now the instrux in Help work.

But what a concept. Old style menus in some views, ribbon UI in others.
Dr. Frankenstein would be SO proud.

And you should have known that Outlook's main window did not get the Ribbon
treatment in 2007 as it would have eaten most of the Office resources to
convert.

Thankfully, Outlook and the rest of the Office programs now have the ribbon
interface uniformly across the board in 2010.

And why should I have known this, pray?

I use Outlook only under duress. And every time it crawls out from under
there, I hit it with a rock and it crawls back.
