I'm a novice user and would like to set up a timeline to track events in a
missing person case. I want to be able to go back and add in new entries and
would prefer it to run vert. Entries on both side of line a plus. I have
office professional and don't care which office programs is used to create
this.

It doesn't run vertically, but Outlook itself has a timeline view. One
thought would be to create a new Calendar (or Task or Journal, depending on
which better matches the kinds of information/events you use) folder, and
set up a Timeline view for it. See if that works for your needs.

If not, I've seen satisfactory timelines set up in Excel, although you have
to do a lot more setup work.

Let us know if anything works out for you. In my experience, Outlook's
timeline is mostly overlooked. If it doesn't work for you, some feedback to
MS on what it's lacking might be useful.

Not part of Office, I also wonder if Microsoft Project might be a possible
way to go.
