How2 Export Filtered Contacts?

I need to construct a filtered view of my contacts, then export the
survivors into a file. I apply the filter then do the export, but it exports
the entire contacts folder. Surely Outlook supports what I need!

Any suggestions?

OK, I figured it out. First filter, then copy to an empty folder, then
export from that folder. I think I see an opportunity for usability
improvements here!

Don't export. Never export a PST is you don't have to. You can lose
information that way.

Create a new PST. Create a new Contacts folder in that PST. Filter your
existing Contacts and select them all (CTRL-A), right-click and drag them to
the new Contacts folder. When asked, choose Copy. Or you can select them,
click Edit>Copy and, in the new Contacts folder, click Edit>Paste. Or you
can use CTRL-C/CTRL-V. When the new Contacts folder has been populated,
close the PST (right-click the root and choose Close), stop Outlook, and
copy the PST to the machine where you want the selected contacts. Place it
on that machine's hard drive in whatever folder you want, making sure you do
not overwrite any PST of the same name, make sure the Read-Only attribute is
not set. Then, in Outlook, click File>Open>Outlook Data File (or Personal
Folders File, depending on your Outlook version, which you didn't state),
browse to the PST, select it, and click OK. You'll now be able to access
the Contacts folder in that PST again. Select all the contacts in that
folder and drag-and-drop them to the main Contacts folder. Close the moved
PST and you're done, with a guarantee that all transferred information is
intact.
