HTML font size question

Aloha,

I have a friend who always sends me HTML email and her fonts end up at
my end being larger. If she sends at 12 points regardless of font
name, it arrives at my Entourage at 14 points. Likewise if she sends
at 14 points it arrives here at 18 points. She is using Entourage
2008 and I am still on Entourage 2004 but I used to get large fonts
from her previously when she was using Entourage 2004 as well. In the
other direction the sizes I send are what she receives.

Is there anything we can do to eliminate this font size differential?

Tell her to stop sending HTML mail and send plain text instead. That way
whoever she sends messages to (including you) will be able to view her
messages in *their own* preferred fonts and size rather than hers. Also,
HTML messages are anywhere from two to four times larger than plain text
equivalents, which means they will not only take longer to transfer, but
will also take more space on both her and her recipient's computer (not
to mention all the servers it hits along the way).  She should
understand what she is doing is rude and wasteful. Would you bother to
read a news paper if it showed up at your door with text you could
barely read?

While this is understandable, to say she is rude and wasteful is a bit
mean...(she might plead to ignorance). However such as it is, this
does not answer the original question of why her text sent at 12
points arrives to my email as 14 point and text sent at 14 point
arrives to my Entourage as 18 point? This does not happen in
reverse. I just want to know the technical reasons why her fonts get
upsized instead of remaining at the size she originally composed? I
am not arguing about plain text email being so much smaller and so on
but rather why her HTML email is behaving contrary to what one would
expect in terms of font sizes...

I believe that this is a change in the way that Entourage 2008
calculates display fonts (changing from using pixels to points, or
maybe it's the other way round?). Anyway, I never really "got" the
explanation myself because if something looks wrong, then it probably
is. I'm happy to bat this around with you more offline, but as it
involves discussing stuff from the beta, I really would prefer to not
say anymore in this forum.

Except this: It's a design decision by the Microsoft Mac BU and I
sincerely wish that they would reverse it as soon as possible!

Personally, I would consider it a bug.

And it got filed as one too! But after some semantic to-ing and fro-
ing (not to mention a lot of screen shots explaining the idiocy of the
decision), the bug got closed as "by design". So what can you do eh? I
hope that plenty of people give feedback in the coming weeks and
months, so that this will be reversed. It's hideous.

On the other hand, it's forced me to only use plain text, so you're
happy, right?

Robbert,

The best place to send your comments on this is to use the "Send
Feedback about Entourage" option, under the Help menu in Entourage
2008.

Thanks,

Pw
