Hung Up Install/Setup

C

Carol Warman

Environment: Win XP Pro - Office 2000

I uninstalled Office 2000 SR1 (long story as to the reason) and then ran
eraser2k.exe. I then reinstalled Office 2000. The "completed successfully"
message appeared. Problem: Whenever I open an Access mdb file, Setup starts
to run (message appears "preparing to install...") again and it appears that
it is going through the install process. BTW, the Access mdb file eventually
does open. This only happens when opening an Access mdb file. All other file
types behave as expected.

Note: I have "Run All from My Computer" set for all Office programs and
other components.

Are there any files/registry entries that I can "nuke" or modify to get this
repeating install to stop?

TIA.

Hi Carol,

You might try looking in the application event log. To do this, go to the
Control Panel/Administrative Tools, and open the event viewer. Choose
application event log.

You should see an MsiInstaller message for every time the Installer runs.
Double-click on the first one - it should say that it was successful.

Use the down arrow to view the messages until you see what component
triggered the installer to run. This message should give a registry key or
file location. Check the permissions on this key or file. You will need to
be able to write to this location, as the installer is running, grabbing
what it needs, and then cannot save it. As a result, it runs again the next
time you open Access, and grabs the same settings it couldn't save before.

If you have any problems, you can send your app event log directly to me,
and I'll take a look.

HTH,
Karen
