hyperlink opening blank document

calm competence nearly

When I set up a hyperlnk sometimes it is linking to blank document.I have linked to a real document,which I have checked but then when I open the link it takes me to a blank document whicch Word seems to have created itself.If I manually go to the said document I can open it and it is a genuine document.
Are there any alternative ways to set up links that are reliable-this system seems so full of problems.

Can you provide the version of Word you are using, the patches installed and the steps you are using to create the Hyperlink?

For example are you clicking the "Insert Hyperlink" command on the toolbar? Copy/pasting the document path? Typing the document path?
