Hyperlink trouble

D

David French

I sent out an e-mail in which I created a hyperlink.
It was designed to take the user to a .BAT file that would copy an IE link
to their desktop.

When I send it out it looks like your everyday normal hyperlink.
Once the user gets it it looks like this...
If you want a shortcut on your desktop, click here.
<\\Poughkeepsie\Drivers\Batch\CopyNetworkSISdesktop.bat>

If you want SIS to start automatically when you logon in the morning, click
here. <\\Poughkeepsie\Drivers\Batch\CopyNetworkSISstartup.bat>

When they click on either one of them there are only 2 options...Save to
Disk or Cancel.

Anyone have any suggestions?!?!

Hi David,

Thanks for posting here.

In order to do some further research on this issue, I need your help to
collect some information:

1. Does the problem appear to all the clients? What's the edition of your
Outlook and Windows? Please select Help/About Microsoft Outlook in Outlook
and let me know the detail product edition number. For example, Outlook
2003 (11.6359.6360) sp1

2. Open the link in both Outlook preview pane and in the message display
windows by double-click it. Are the results the same?

3. Temporarily close the anti-virus firewall on the client machine and test
the issue again.

4. Copy the link, and then click Start/Run, paste the link in the run
commend field. Will it be executed properly?

5. Please capture a screenshot on the prompt. You can attach it in the post
or send it to me directly at [email protected]

Thanks for the time collecting the information above. Actually, I have done
a test in Windows XP/Outlook 2003 on my local and success to open the
target .BAT file.

If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me know.

Regards,

Pat Cai

Pat,
Thank you so much for your reply.
The clients I am sending to are Outlook 2000 SP3 on Windows 2000 SP4.
I am going to follow this e-mail with a 'resend' of the original e-mail I
sent out to my clients.
Thanks,
Dave French

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply!

After checked the problematic email that you send me, I believe that the
problem is not caused by the email but Outlook or Windows. In order to
narrow down this issue, I still need your help to collect the following
information:

1. Does the problem occur to all the clients or just some particular users?

2. Does the problem occur to all types of file in the file link? Try
sending a JPG or TXT file link and what's result?

3. Would the link be opened in Start/Run prompt?

4. Please capture a screenshot on the popup after clicking the file link.

Here are some general steps you may try to solve the problem:

Step 1: Reregister Urlmon.dll

==================================

This problem can occur if the registration of the Urlmon.dll file is
corrupted. To resolve this problem, Please reregister Urlmon.dll. To do
this, please follow these steps:

1. Quit all programs that are running.

2. Click Start, and then click Run.

3. In the Open box, type "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without the quotation
marks), and then click OK. The following message appears:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. Click OK.

Please test to click a hyperlink again and let me know the result.

Step 2: Reset Web Settings.

===================================

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Go to Tools -> Internet Options.

3. On the Programs tab, please click the "Reset Web Settings" button.

4. Please check the "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is
the default browser" checkbox.

5. Click OK to confirm the change.

Step 3: Edit URL protocol file types:

====================================

1. Double click My Computer; click Tools -> Folder Options -> the File
Types folder

2. Click the File Types column to sort the column list. In the File Types
column, find the URL: HyperText Transfer Protocol item and click the
Advanced button.

3. Select the Open item, click Edit. Use the following steps to check the
settings.

If there is no "Open" in the Actions list, please click New to create one.
In the Action field, type: Open

4. In the Application Used to perform action box:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

Note: Please confirm your iexplore.exe path. Click Start -> Find -> Files
or Folders, type iexplore.exe. You can replace "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe" by the real path of iexplore.exe on your computer,
such as

"A:\B\iexplore.exe" -nohome

5. Select the USE DDE option.

6. In the DDE Message field, type:

"%1",,-1,0,,,,

7. In the Application field, type: IExplore

8. Don't type any information in the IExplor DDE Application Not Running
field

9. In the Topic field type: WWW_OpenURL, click OK.

After you set the Open item correctly, click Set Default.

10. Save these settings, and then repeat the process for other URL protocol
file types.

<<URL:File>> Transfer Protocol

<<URL:Gopher>> Protocol

<<URL:Hypertext>> Transfer protocol with Privacy

I appreciate your time and efforts. If anything is unclear, feel free to
let me know. I am happy to be of assistance and look forward to hearing
from you.
