Hyperlinks Malfunctioning in Word 2003

I have a rather peculiar problem and wondered if anyone had any bright ideas
about the possible cause.

I am dragging audio files (rm & wav) into a word document as hyperlinks. To
open the audio file I simply hold down CTRL and double click. This has worked
very well for weeks.

Now, however, it is not working and I notice that the file path has changed
(when I hover over the hyperlink it gives me the file path to the audio
file). I have my audio files stored on the F Drive but the hyperlink is
saying that the file is on the C Drive. It isn't. Presumably this is why it
won't open.

Does anyone know what might be causing this error?

I'm getting the feeling my problem isn't exciting anyone! Butit's causing a
heap of work for me. Can anyone help?

Do you have, or have you had, a hyperlink base set (under File > Properties

J

Jackie D

No. I didn't know there was such a thing as the hyperlink base set. The root
just mysteriously changed to a drive that doesn't actually contain the file.

Have you moved the document at all?

Fixing it can be a bit awkward as hyperlinks are stored as relative.

Can you tell me the full path to your document?
And the full path to one of your broken hyperlinks?

What, if anything, shows in the Hyperlink Base box (at the bottom of the
dialog for Tools > Properties > Summary tab)

Lastly, click on one of the broken hyperlinks (preferably the one you've
just given me the full path for) and press Shift+F9. What shows as the
hyperlink (between the quotes)?
(Shift+F9 again will restore your normal view)

Hi Tony

That's the mystery: I haven't moved them at all. They are all still on the F
Drive.

Here is the location of the audio file link:
file:///F:\\My Documents\Data Audio\Cork Accents\Wildlife Sanctuary.rm

And here is the broken link:
file:///C:\\My Documents\Data Audio\Cork Accents\Wildlife Sanctuary.rm

There is nothing written in the hyperlink base box .

I pressed F9 but it isn't doing anyting except inserting {} in the middle of
a word in the hyperlink.

Hi Jackie,

Can you please try SHIFT+F9 not just F9

And what is the full path to your document containing the hyperlinks?

J

Jackie D

Hi Tony

This is what it says when I press Shift+9

{HYPERLINK "C:\\My Documents\Data Audio\Cork Accents\Wildlife Sanctuary.rm"}

The full path of the document containing the hyperlink is:

F:\My Documents\TGW\Cast\Cast List.doc
--

Many thanks

Hi Jackie,

Somehow the hyperlinks have become absolute (and wrong!). I can only
speculate, but Word may have got confused because of the "My Documents"
folder name existing on two drives.

This can be awkward to correct and you can test more easily than me. First
thing to try is ...

Press Alt+F9 to make all your hyperlinks appear as { HYPERLINK ....
Use Find and Replace to Find all "C:\\" and replace with "F:\\"
Press Alt+F9 again to change the display back to normal.

This should make all the hyperlinks absolute to the F drive - but I'm not
sure if it will stick (because I'm not sure of the cause).

Hi Tony

Thanks for the suggestion. That will save me a load of time redoing all my
hyperlinks from scratch.
