Hyperlinks to https target

Charles Bailey

I'm trying to set up hyperlinks from a cell to an outside data source,
but when the protocol in the URL is https, Excel returns the error
"Unable to open <URL>. Cannot locate the Internet server or proxy
server." In a test case, when the protocol is changed to http, the
link works, but that's not useful in the general case.

Environment: Excel 10.1.5, Mac OS X 10.3.4

I can find a note about preference problems in Excel98/Mac OS 9, but
no mention for recent versions. Has anyone encountered this problem?
If so, is there a bit of configuration that can be changed to fix it,
or is Excel trying to be too smart about the URL and failing, rather
than just handing it to the browser?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi Charles,

I tried using this URL
https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

In both Excel X and Excel 2004 the link worked just fine when I used it from
Visual Basic and from simply linking from a cell. I could not reproduce the
problem you are having.

It might be something to do with your browser. I really really like OmniWeb
version 5 beta 8 so it is my default browser and that is what I used in my
testing.

Try using OmniWeb as your default browser and see if that makes any
difference.
