Hyperlinks to web do not work

We have Office 2008 installed on a brand new iMac running 10.5.5.
Word. Word is fully patched to 12.1.1. When we click on a hyperlink we
have inserted we get an error message:

Cannot locate the internet server or proxy server

I fought this with Word X and it seems it still does not work with
Word 2008. Yes we use a proxy server since we are a public school
district.

Any work arounds?

Does the browser launch when the hyperlink is clicked?

Is there more than one browser installed? Have you tried entering the URL
directly into the default browser's address bar? What happens if you do?

I will have to check whether the browser launches or not. I do know
that I tested this when I already had my default browser on the Mac
open. All of our Macs have two browsers installed, Safari and Firefox.
Firefox is set as the default browser. The URL I am testing this with
is www.apple.com and certainly when I enter this into the URL bar of
the browser it takes me to Apple's website.

If on the other hand I insert a hyperlink into Word or Powerpoint and
then click on this hyperlink I get the error message:

Cannot locate the internet server or proxy server

So there is really no solution for this? When I click hyperlinks
inserted into Word documents on a PC, the browser opens just fine and
takes me to a site. Is this just a bug in Word 2008 for the Mac?

At home this works fine on my Mac but of course I am not using a proxy
server

I'm not saying there's no solution, but I don't think the solution has
anything to do with Word. My line of reasoning is this:

AFAIK, Word doesn't do any browsing nor does it have any idea what a proxy
server is - it simply stores the URL as an active hyperlink. When you click
the link it calls the default browser to retrieve that address. If the
default browser isn't configured properly it won't be able to comply. If you
have more than one browser it's possible that the one designated as the
default isn't seeing the proxy server even though the "secondary" browser
may be correctly configured. IOW, Word doesn't pick which browser to use.

I have two browsers on all of my Macs, Firefox and Safari. They are
both configured correctly and are set to go through a proxy server. If
they were not configured correctly, when a staff member or student
launched them to browse the web, they would not work. I do think it is
a problem with Word and how it interacts with the browser. When I
click on a hyperlink within Word and it gives me the message "Cannot
locate the internet server or proxy server" that leads me to believe
that Word is somehow not handling the fact that we use a proxy
correctly. When I am at home and not using a proxy, everything is
fine. When I am on a PC using Word 2007 at school it works fine. I had
the default browser set to Firefox and hyperlinks will not work. I set
it to Safari and tested again and hyperlinks will not work.

Hello again -

I'm afraid my exposure to proxy servers is somewhat limited, but I've asked
that someone with more insights have a look at this thread. I can't specify
when, but check back for additional input.
