hyperlinks

Three questions related to hyperlinks in cells:

1)I use to think that a cell could be a hyperlink, but could not have a
value in it as well (other than the hyperlink name itself). After some
tweaking, it appears this is not the case. Is there anything I should
be concerned about if I use a cell both for normal data purposes, as
well as hyperlinking the cell to a folder, etc?

2) Is there a way to hyperlink a cell to a contact in Outlook?

3) Is there a way to maintain hyperlinks even if the link location
changes? In other words, I would like to link to certain folders, but
often change the location of the folders. This seems to break the link.
Any ideas how to preserve the links? I am using a spreadsheet with
dozens of links, and it is painful to have to manually update the
links.

Thanks! David

You can specify a hyperlink base, that your hyperlinks will be appended to.
Click on file/properties/summary, then fill in the hyperlink base. Save the
file.
Then if you change the location of the folder, you can change the hyperlink
base.
However, in Excel 2003, my files are not saving the hyperlink base. There
are some older files that do save the hyperlink base, even though we change
them. I don't know if they were created with Excel 2003 or not. Also, there
are issues with absolute and relative addressing, which I am not yet
knowledgable about. I would suggest you try it out with a few items, and
move the files around, and make sure it works before you use it extensively.
I have put a question about the hyperlink base being lost on the board, and
sent it to Microsoft, but so far no answers.
What we are doing is, I made a copy of a file that works and deleted
everything, getting an empty file that works. Now we copy our data into that
file from a file that doesn't work, and get a file that does work. Also, we
are copying the hyperlink base into the comments block (at the same place as
the hyperlink base), so if the hyperlink base is lost, we will still have the
address, and can copy it into the hyperlink base when we need it. Another
idea I've suggested is that we can save the hyperlink base at the beginning
of the spreadsheet, and I could write a macro that runs when the file opens,
and uses the value in the cell to set the value of the hyperlink base.

I hope something of this helps.

Thanks for your help. I had no idea there was such a thing under the
file menu, so very happy to find a solution. I do use Excel 2003, and
have tested your suggestion - no problems so far, so not sure why you
are having problems.

Also, do you know how to link to a Contact in Outlook?

Thanks,
David
