I accidentally delted the File button from the menu.

How do I put the File button back in the menu bar for the 2003 version? I
have tried for an hour but cannot figure out how to put it back.

2003 version of what?

If you mean Word, try Tools - Customize - Toolbars tab - click on Menu Bar,
then click Reset.

I tried, it does'nt bring back the File button. It's strikes me now that it
was almost like I accidentally dragged and dropped it somewhere. It wasn't
until I searched help and found out how to remove something from the menu bar
that I realized what I'd done.

I also tried using the disc to repair the program to it's original state. I
may just completely reinstall it. Oh yeah! Yes it's Word.

I have NEVER seen Reset not work to restore a missing menu. Are you sure you
followed all of the steps?

When you say "File button", I assume you're talking about the word "File" on
the menu. Are you perhaps instead talking about one of the buttons on the
Standard toolbar? Since there isn't one called File, I figured you were
talking about the menu. If you mean something on the Standard toolbar, then
try this:

If you mean Word, try Tools - Customize - Toolbars tab - click on Standard,
then click Reset.

If you really did mean the File item on the menu, then it's important that
you click on Menu Bar in the list before clicking Reset.

Also... another possibility that occurs to me is that perhaps you have
modified the menu in a template other than Normal.dot (i.e., attached to a
specific document). If that's the case, then when you reset, you need to
make sure that the correct template name shows up in the Reset Toolbar
dialog that appears after you click Reset.

If worse comes to worse, you can always delete or rename Normal.dot, and
Word will create a new one. Renaming or deleting Normal.dot should reset all
of your menus and toolbars to the factory default.

Yes this was for Microsoft Word in Office in case you missed it in the other
reply. Some of what you just wrote is over my head and will take a while to
process and check. However, in the menu bar with the buttons Edit, View,
Insert, Format, Tools, etc. There was a file button with the following in its
menu, open, new blank document, print, print preview, page set-up, save, save
as.. etc but not necessarily in that order. THAT File button is gone and
uninstalling and reinstalling Office has not replaced it.

Also, going to "customize" per your intructions and clicking the 'command'
tab you can see the list of menu items of which File is the first one.

Uninstalling and reinstalling Word almost never fixes anything, because it
doesn't replace the pieces that most often contain the problem -- in this case,
the Normal.dot template.

Herb already described the correct fix, but since you didn't understand it, go
read the step-by-step version; it's Method 2 in
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/RestoreMenuCmd.htm.

Sorry, Method 2 worked. I saw the menu bar was checked, I assumed it WAS
selected. Perhaps saying highlight the checked menu line and clicking reset
may be a bit more clear to those of us who are anal and OCD. :) Thanks SOOO
much for your help, I'm still smiling!!!

What about using something like "Click on Menu Bar"? Would that help
clarify?

Apparently not, Beth. ;-) Succinctness, like subtlety, doesn't work for
everyone.

But, I'm glad his problem is fixed.
