I have started getting junk mail with my email address in the "from
header" list of unopened mail. I using Outlook 2000 on my personal
machine at home and the mail is coming from a POP3
server(mail.bellsouth.net). Any ideas?
A common trick by SPAMmers. It's the easiest thing in the world to spoof
the sender address and the SPAMmers sending out these messages have
harvested you address from somewhere and are using it as the sender address.
One way this commonly happens is by hijacking the PC owned by someone who
has your address in their address book. SPAMmers compromise the PCs of
people who are not properly protected, placing their relay software on that
PC. The infecting software scans the infected PC for addresses and, when it
sends its junk out, it randomly substitutes as sender one of the addresses
that it harvested.
Does that help?
