i am locked out of my database by security settings

I put some security settings on my database and now when I open it it tells
me i havent got permission to open it! Can I remove the database or restore
the unsecured .bak version of the database?

I assume you ran the security wizard. If you do have the .bak of the
database, that is the unsecured version.

If you want to keep security, you'll find that the wizard put a shortcut on
your desktop to open the mdb.

If you want to remove security, then yes, you can just rename the bak file
to have a mdb extension instead. That will put you back to square one.

Thanks! I did that and changed the admin workgroup file so i coudl actually
access the database again.

I have renamed the .bak file but i am still asked for a password and
username when I open the file.

I would like to completely remove the security. can you please tell me how
to do that?

Do a search on your computer for *.mdw and note the locations.
Open Access (no database) and go to Tools, Security, Workgroup
Administrator.
It will show you the workgroup you are currently joined to by default.
Click on Join..You want to join the system.mdw that ships with Access (found
in your search above).

Hi Joan,
I have the same problem as David and have tried everything you suggested but
still get prompeted for a username/password. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled Access but still no luck. Is there anything else I can do.

Sounds like you have modified the default system.mdw that comes with Access.

Do a search for all *.mdw files (be sure to include hidden and system
folders). Rename each one that it finds eg. system.mdw to systemOLD.mdw
etc.

Now start Access; since it can't find the mdw set as the default, it
should create a new pristine system.mdw file for you (assuming a recent
version of Access).
