I asked a question and I was misguided....

M

MicroFox

I came here and asked if I can have office2003 and 2007 B2TR on the same
machine...

SURE the told me...

I CLEARLY asked it I would have a problem..

Noooo they told me...

I went and installed it...

then I had an error about a file.. someone told me to uninstall sharepoint
from the optional things office 2003 installs. I did that.

Now if I start word 2003 it cruches away for long before it starts... it
opens after several minutes...

When I open office 2007 it too crunches away with a installing window...

These 2 are fighting for co-existance!

I call that bad advice !!!

Actually, you asked:
"Ok I have office 2003 that I want to keep, and I have the office 2007 beta
and TR and the EWD beta (expression web designer)

So remind me.. can I install 2007 on top without losing 2003 (or destroying
it) and what should I install first? EWD or Office 2007?

Because i can recall you had to install one before the other or it didnt
work...

thanks"

And you were told:
"Note that you'll have to decide whether you want Outlook 2003 or 2007. If
you want 2007, remove Outlook 2003 before doing anything else. Do a custom
install of 2007 Beta 2 and chose to keep all previous versions. Then install
B2TR. Then install EWD. "

Where in that conversation did you ask if you'd have any compatibility
issues and where in that question does it say that you wouldn't?

They work alongside each other though. Or do you have any evidence that
the programs don't work?
Also, this is limited to Word and Access. In addition, this behavior
exists in RTM as well.

BTW, just to set the record straight. You asked:
"can I install 2007 on top without losing 2003 (or destroying it)"
Clearly by installing 2007, you did not lose 2003 or destroyed it. You
are experiencing annoying behavior, but 2003 is working.
And then you asked:
" I DID try a repair, but then when started office2007 cruched away for
several minutes before it started.. as if IT was repariing iteself..
then when I started office 2003 again
I got that same stupid message!

Can I fix this? is this perhaps a feature that I can remove from
office2003 that I dont need and so I wont get that warning again?"
And I told you that you can try to remove the SharePoint component.

I answered the questions you asked.

its ok...

But just a rhetorical question, how could MS do this thing even in RTM,
when some people share the same computer and one user might want word2003
while the other word2007...

its illogical in my opinion...

And for me... I want to use office2003 because its interface is better in my
opinion, but
I would also want to learn slowly the new office.... and perhaps convince
myself that
the ribbon is nice (very slim possibility).

This has not happened with other versions of office.. they could work side
by side without reinstalling themselves each time.

It sounds as if you didn't read the warning about using the beta on a

MS position is that two Office versions on the same computer is
unsupported. However, they try their best to make it possible.

If you have any two versions of Office ('97, 2002) (2000, 2003) (2000, 2002)
and run one version of Word, exit that version and then run another version
of word, you will always get the "installing" screen. Always been that way
and always will be that way since different .dlls and other files must be
run for each version. It just isn't noticeable when you go from a higher
version to '97 but it still installs parts of '97. It is something you have
to live with. I have successfully had Word '97, 2000, 2002 and 2003 running
on the same computer at the same time and tiled onto the desktop in 4
windows. Switched back and forth while creating documents and teaching all
4 versions at the same time. There was no DESTRUCTION going on at all.

I am specifically staying away from 2007 for a period of time until all the
fireworks of a new release dies down considering all the posts about
problems with the installation and activation of '07 beta and released
versions so far.

I do not recall this behavior... but on the other hand.. there was no need
for me
to have more versions of word for example because the GUI of the products
were similar and logical. The NEW ribbon that is non functional and stupid
is my problem...
and that's why I wanted to keep 2003 on...

and when you restart2007 the reinstallation IS VERY noticeable because it
takes
5 minutes to sort itself out before launching..

I call that crap design..... they should have a simpler installer.. and
don't tell me it cant be done...

I have seen super complex programs converted to stand- alone programs by
some people, but its impossible with office because its too "Microsoft".. it
roots into the OS
like a treacherous weed...
