I can not Open Folders or Save/Save As new Documents

B

Bobcville

When I try to OPEN Folders or SAVE/SAVE AS a new Word or Excel Office
Document, Microsoft Office refuses to open/save and says
Open (Not Responding) or Save As (Not Responding).

Before this problem occurred I tried to open an old wps document inside Word
and got only garbage. Wordperfect loaded and maybe messed up Word. We first
uninstalled Wordperfect, of course. Then rebooted. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled Microsoft Office 2003. I had also just loaded the automatic
updates from Microsoft.

How can I fix this problem?

FWIW, a .wps file is not a WordPerfect document (.wpd) but a Works word
processor file.

It's the updates, the wps document is a red herring.

You can remove the offending update from Add/Remove Programs, where it shows
as "Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)". Make sure the "show updates"
box at the top is ticked or you won't see hotfixes in the list.

Or wait until Microsoft push out an update.

Thank you very much. I have created, saved, and closed and reopened 2 test
files in WORD and 1 in EXCEL.

Everything seems normal.

Thanks again,

I really need to thank you. I was just about to remove Word and try to
reinstall it when I read your post about removing Security Update KB908531.
I removed it, and Word is back in operation. You really saved me! -- Pat

Thanks for your help. I spent 4 hours last night trying to get Word and
Excel working. I followed your advice today and everything is back to normal.

Folks... the votes are in. Problem solved. Solution offered by BMC works
flawlessly. Note that when removing KB908531, system warns that other apps
could be adversely affected; so far so good, Firefox and Adobe are not among
those apps.

Geeze! I knew it was a simple friggin fix, but how nuts is this? Can I
invoice Bill for this one?

See
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...inetexplorer.ie6.browser/msg/094143b42d0c3ca2
and http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165. The message gives clearer
instructions for doing what Microsoft is recommending.

As for invoicing Bill...
Here are a couple of earlier posts:

I don't like the situation any better than you do. However, Microsoft cannot
cross-test everything they release against all other software. It turns out
that the problem is the intersection of their security patch and some HP
software. It was not the Microsoft product that stops the computer from
working. If you disable the HP product, your computer will work. The fix
they posted helps some people. The security hole that they are trying to fix
is significant, a very real threat. I have lots of issues with Microsoft,
but here they seem to be doing all that is humanly possible.

Easter seems an appropriate time to paraphrase John 8:7 -- If you have
never given someone advice or aid that you thought would work, only to
be caught out by an unforeseen circumstance, then you have the right
to condemn Microsoft for this mistake.

Or perhaps you'd rather they left every Windows user at risk while
they tested their patch against every piece of third-party software in
the known universe. That would only take a few years...

THANK YOU! After spending several hours on this problem I finally found this
site and voila...it was corrected!

How do I prevent Microsoft Automatic Updates from reinstalling (KB908531)?

You probably do want to install it and then try the fix at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165 ("Problems in Windows Explorer or the
Windows shell after you install security update MS06-015").

I am having the same problem as Bobcville described. I tried the fix you
described below with no success. Here is some of the error message info I
received:
WER97f8.dir00\EXCEL.EXE.mdmp
WER97f8.dir00\appcompat.txt
szModName: hungapp
szAppVer: 11.0.8169.0

Please help.

Terry Farrell

Please test Word in Safe Mode. From Start, Run (Winkey+R), type in

winword /a

and press enter. Does Word work OK whilst in safe mode?

Allvarsity

Unfortunately No. The program opened just fine, but when I tried to open a
document, the cursor stopped blinking and went into (Not Responding). I
closed and reopened winword /a three times with the same results.

The error msg that followed:
Error signature
szAppName : WINWORD.EXE
szAppVer : 11.0.8169.0
szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0
offset : 00000000

Error Report Contents
C:\DOCUME~1\FFP\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER8b5a.dir00\WINWORD.EXE.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\FFP\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER8b5a.dir00\appcompat.txt

What do you suggest next?

Terry Farrell

Open again in Safe Mode and go immediately to Word Options, Resources,
Diagnose.

Hello Terry:
I can't find the directory to Diagnose. I have looked in the menu choice:
Tools> Options with no luck finding Research or Diagnose. What am I doing
wrong? The program I am trying to fix is part of Office 2003 suite; hope that
helps.

Suzanne S. Barnhill

That's because you don't have Word 2007, for which Terry provided
directions. For previous versions, try Help | Detect and Repair.

T

Terry Farrell

Sorry, you're not using Word 2007! As you are using W2003, open Word and
click on Help, Detect and Repair.

Terry and Suzanne;

Thanks for the instruction. I opened Help> Detect and Repair. I tried this
approach when I received the info from Terry and again after getting your
post. I deselected the Restore my shortcuts box and (unfortunately) selected
the Discard my customized... box. Ooops, I've spent the last two hours trying
to remember and finally restoring my Outlook.pst files, emails, contacts,
etc. What a blunder.

Anywho... the Detect and Repair did not find and fix the problem.

What's next?
