{Blush!} And I soooo should have though of that one. I am so sorry for
wasting your time!

Match font with keyboard is one of the mis-conceived "half features" in Word
that really needs to go away, because the only reason you become aware of it
is when it breaks the document :)

Cheers

God, it was easy. I checked the Czech distributor's website and they give the
simple advice of switching off the "Match Font with Keyboard" option in
Preferences > Edit. So much for all the hassle about config files. :-D

Advice from Microsoft- worked for me :)
Adjust the match font with keyboard setting:
-In Word go to Word in the menu and choose Preferences.
-Go to Edit
-Uncheck Match font with keyboard
-Click OK
-Quit Word from the Word menu
-Launch Word to a new blank document
-Try to use different fonts than Times
-When this is working then try to open existing documents and check the
preferences file to make sure that Match font with keyboard is still unchecked

Thanks God I found this thread!
When reading the posts I immediately realized that the problem had something
to do with foreign or "Central European" fonts. So many Central European
names heren :) and I am also using Polish font and experiencing the same
problem. The thing is this only started after upgrading to Snow leopard.
Thank you guys, good work!

Yes, it is now a "Confirmed Bug" in some of the non-English flavours of
Word.

Turning off "Match font with keyboard" will fix it.

I have suggested to Microsoft that "removing" the Match Font with Keyboard
function would be a great step forward. It's just another of those
"automatically screw up your document" mis-features that could usefully be
removed from the product.

Along with embedding people's email addresses in the document when you type
their name, and inventing styles out of thin air if your selection is less
than precise.

Cheers
