Thank you for your comments. I have worked round this problem by copying the
presentation onto a new file and done the adjustments there. However
whenever I tried to insert a new slide I was actually getting duplicates of
the slide with a pattern fill which I use at the begining and end of each
presentation and was unable to clear the slide to white.
This did not affect slides with pictures on them. I could remove the
background and or change the colour of the background on them.
By the way I actually choose different colour backgrounds deliberately for
different groups of slides in a presentation;-
a. to complement the colours of the paintings
b distinguish centuries or types
c. stop people falling asleep
They are all very subtle heritage colours!
Many thanks for your comments; they were useful as they set me exploring
options. I just wish Power Point was more convenient to use as compared with
the Open Office version.
