I cannot copy page links in Publisher

For some reason, I cannot copy/paste a text with a link to another page in my
document from page to page. I use a text area to create my links. So link 1
is linked to page 1 etc etc.... When I go to copy that text area to other
pages, only the text is copied and I have to redo the entire linking !

I could swear it use to work before. It also does the same thing now when I
use the Hot Spot feature. ALL EXTERNAL LINKS TO OTHER WEBSITES COPY PASTE
FINE !

Can anyone help me !

Sounds like you set up your first link, say on page 1 to page 2 of your
site, and then when you copy that link and try to paste it on page 2, it
won't work....because you are on page 2....not going to work if you are
already there.

When you use the Insert Hyperlink to Place in This Document, you are writing
relative links, and when you write a link to an external site, those are
absolute links.

Ok, that would be logical David. However, does that have to be the case for
ALL the pages. Lets say on page 1, I have a link for all my 10 pages. I
select everything and go on page 2 to copy it. NONE of the links copy, only
the text. I know I use to do that cause it was the easiest way for me to do a
navigation bar on my websites. I don't know if it is a recent update that did
this, but it is frustrating. Following your logic, the rest should still copy
except for the page I am currently on !

Thanks for the suggestions !

Ok, I would agree that it is something more, and I suspect it might be in
the way your are either writing or inserting your hyperlinks.

Please tell me what version of Publisher you are using? Did you switch
versions?

Tell me the specific steps you take to produce/insert the hyperlinks that
don't work, and paste an example of how you are writing the link. Have you
hand built a navigation system? Is this what you are trying to paste from
page to page? Have you tried changing your links to absolute links? If you
are trying to build a textual menu, then David Bartosik has a good article:
"Code your own textual navigation menu in Publisher":
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/archive/2006/01/16/81255.aspx

Generally give me a more specific description of what you are doing, and the
problem...and I'll try again.

Ok , Let's say I start a new project. I create the way I want the page to
look like, then duplicate the number of copies (pages) I need for that
project. So let's say 5 pages. Now on my first (original) page, I create a
text box and write the following (example)

Now before the only thing I had to do is set the appropriate hyperlinks for
Home, Page 2 etc etc etc and then copy paste the entire text and copy it on
Page 2. The links would be intact and I would do the same for Page 3 etc etc.
However now, it copies only the text but not the links. NO LINKS AT ALL ARE
COPIED OVER !

I use publisher 2007 !

I am guessing that their was an update in Pub 2007 and now prevents us from
doing this (might be accidental) but looking at earlier work (using the same
software) I know that it how I did my links. Now I have to copy the text and
redo the entire linking process. It's fine for a 5 page project, imagine a
bigger one !

I hope this was clear enough ! Thanks

In addition to this, wanted to let you know that all external links (example
Yahoo.com and other websites instead of pages work. So the links remain on
every page after every copy/paste).

Thanks

No need for exclamation points or shouting...I can read and I understand
this is important to you.

I tried your experiment, and could not reproduce your problem. I created a
one page web site in Pub 2007, inserted 4 duplicate page without the navbar
wizard. One the first page I created a text box with your example, selected
Home, Page 2, etc. and right clicked, hyperlink, and inserted a hyperlink as
another page in the document. Then I copied the text box (right click, copy)
and pasted it on each of the other pages, and the hyperlinks survived and
functioned in a webpage preview and with the Ctrl + click shortcut directly
from the Pub doc. The text box was placed at the bottom of the page and did
not overlap any other design elements.

How did you insert the hyperlinks? Are you copying the whole text box or
just the text with the hyperlinks and trying to paste inside another text
box on the other pages?

I was using the most recent beta version of Pub 2007. If you had one of the
earlier versions of the beta installed and did not uninstall it before
installing the new, that might be part of the problem. And if so, then you
are apparently part of the technical beta group, so perhaps you should post
this as a bug, and see if they can reproduce it.

You didn't say what version of Publisher you originally created your site
with. From my testing when I opened an existing Pub 2000 website file, in
Pub 2007, the links from the original document lost the blue color and
underline. Interestingly, the link still functioned. In this case I just
right clicked, hyperlink, and clicked ok, and all was well. I suspect that
if you are opening a Pub 2000 file in Pub 2007, then you may find problems
with the links.
