I cannot find My Places on the Open or Save menus

Are you running Windows XP or Vista? In Windows XP, the Places bar should be
showing up in any File dialog box. Click Office button (upper left corner) -
Open, and it should be right there in the left side of the Open dialog box.

In Vista, it has been replaced by the Favorite Links area. If all you see at
the left is Folder, then click the Folders title area, and you should now
see both Favorite Links and Folders. You can drag the top of the Folders
title bar up/down to change how much of each area you can see. You can drag
shortcuts into the Favorite Links area so that they can provide easy access
to them, much as the Places bar did (but more flexibly, IMO).

Well the Office Help text says that the My Places bar is visible when you
Open or Save As, a file. All I get is a plain box with folders on the left,
files on the right, a Save As box at the bottom plus a Save As Type box. No
sign of icons for Recent Documents, Desktop, My Documents etc. Is there a
setting somewhere which I have missed? I have been all through the Word
Options and have not found anything.

Typical of MS. The Help text on MO 2007 is written for XP not Vista which I
am (unfortunately) using. One more question if I may - you say you can drag
shortcuts to the Favorite Links area. How do I create one? I tried dragging
folder names but it did not work.

Navigate so that you see the desired folder in the right pane, then drag it
into the Favorite Links area. Before you release the mouse button, the text
"Create link in Links" will appear. Once I got used to it, I found the
system in Vista to be a lot more useful/flexible than in XP. In addition to
being able to drag things into the Favorite Links area, the links you drag
there are available in Windows Explorer, not just in Office, since each of
the File dialogs is actually a special view version of Windows Explorer,
rather than a dialog box.

Take a look here for a screen shot and a fuller explanation:

Great, solved at last. Your Word2007bible shows a tickbox next to the
"Startup" folder. How do you get them to appear, please?

In Windows Explorer's menu... Tools - Folder Options - View tab, Use Check
Boxes (2nd checkable setting from the bottom of the list of Advanced
settings). If you don't see the menu and want it to appear... click
Organize - Layout - Menu Bar.
