I cannot paste material from Word except to a Word doc

I can copy a selection from a Word document but cannot paste it except within
the same or another Word document. I would like to paste to Outlook Express.
The option to Paste is available but nothing is pasted. This is a new problem
as I have done this many times in the past. The clipboard is empty. Please
Help.

This can happen if the selection is formatted as hidden - it can't be
converted to plain text to paste into simple editors.
