I cannot remove a horizontal line at the bottom af the page

I have a large document that is ready for printing. Somehow I have managed to
place a vertical line in the footer area below the page number about 1 cm
from the bottom of each page. It streches from left edge to right edge. It is
not accessible when visualizing the footer area, and despite endless attempts
I cannot remove it.

Select the footer paragraph(s). Display the Borders and Shading dialog box
(the exact steps depend on which version of Word you are using). On the
Borders tab, click the "None" option, and click OK.
