I cannot write pound (sterling) symbol with my keyboard

My UK keyboard writes a # instead of a pound symbol and transposes @ and ".
Is there a setting I can change to correct this?
I am using XP and Office 2003

Have you selected the correct Region in XP? See Control Panel, Region
and Language.
