I cant click insert page numbers in word

XPgirl

Im using office 2003. When i use word to create a document i cannot click on
"insert, page numbers". It appears to be disabled because it is a light grey
coour. There are other items that seem to be disabled in the menus too but i
havent needed any of them yet so im not sure if they are usable. Does anyone
have any ideas how i can be able to use the "insert page numbers" feature.

Try this:

1) View, Headers & Footers (this is from Word Menu Bar)
2) The fourth item from the end in the toolbar that opens is a toggle
switch. Click on it and you will be in footers;
3) Now the first item in the toolbar is Insert page number - click on it
and see if it works.

If this fails then you could Repiar the Office Installation by going to
Help, Detect & Repair item.

Thank you, that has enabled me to now insert page numbers. Im still baffled
as to why i cant just click on the "insert page numbers" button. Ive gone
through the "detect and repair" process and i still cant click on it :(

The instructions that ANONYMOUS gave you specify how the feature works.
Detect and repair won't change that. It's by design.

Are you logged in as an Administrator or user with these previleges?
You need to be an administrator or a user belonging to this group. I
appreciate that you must be alone at home using your own system but the
term ADMINISTRATOR is used in XP to indicate advanced rights to alter
the XP system configurations.

Tom,

As understand it, the XPGirl has some menu items grayed out and she
can't click on them. This indicates that something has gone amiss in
the system. She can't even click on Detect & Repair item which is
normally available all the time.

Okay, I guess I misread her post. Thanks for the heads up. Sorry for the
confusion.

First try starting Word using the /a switch. This will load Word using
the defaults and bypass any customizations you may have. Go to
Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If Insert/Page numbers is no longer disabled then chances are you have
an add-in that is causing the difficulty. If that's the case then post
back and we'll provide the further instructions at that point. :)

Not that this makes a huge difference, but I think Detect and Repair
is available but using it doesn't resolve the disabled menu items such
as Insert/Page Number.

Which, since many users have difficulty with page numbers inserted
using Insert/Page Number, disabling it may not be a 'bad thing'.
