i cant edit a new document in word 2007

i find it difficult to start a new document or edit and existing one in word
2007. it keeps bringing a message 'this modification is not allowed because
the selection is locked'. i tried the review tab but the protect tab is not
active. what can i do?

That is a symptom of either you failed to Activate the product when it was
installed or that it is a trial version that has time expired.
